Shalya Tantra is a vital branch of Ayurveda and embraces all processes aimed at removing factors responsible for producing pain or physical agony (Shalya). As one of the eight classical branches (Ashtangas) of Ayurveda, it outlines eight primary types of surgical procedures: Chedan (Excision), Bhedan (Incision), Lekhan (Scraping), Vedhan (Puncturing), Eshan (Probing), Aaharan (Extraction), Seevan (Suturing), and Vistravan (Drainage).
In addition to major and minor surgeries, the department excels in specialized parasurgical modalities including Agnikarma (thermal cauterization), Ksharkarma (alkaline cauterization), Ksharsutra therapy for fistula-in-ano, Marmachikitsa, and Raktamokshana (bloodletting).
